Printing materials. Whichever type of printer you choose, pay attention to the type of material it can use to print. The filament material used by FFM printers like the LulzBot TAZ 6 is available in several different materials, such as PLA (a brittle, biodegradable material), ABS (the same plastic used in Lego blocks), nylon, TPE (a soft, rubberlike material) and HDPE (a light, tough polystyrene). Many of these materials, particularly PLA and ABS, are available in a huge range of colors. Filaments come in two sizes: 1.75 mm and 3 mm, which are not interchangeable.
We have a comprehensive look at the different types of 3D printing materials. along with their pros and cons, and how much you can expect to spend on each.
To make it easier to know which 3D printer is right for you. here are a few things to look out for, along with more information on all of our top picks.
Note that, some printers only allow the use of approved materials or materials produced by the same company that made the printer. In that sense, those types of 3D printers are like more traditional paper printers: The manufacturers sell the hardware cheaply and then make money back on the consumables. (Our top budget 3D printer, the da Vinci Mini, only works with PLA filament from manufacturer XYZprinting, for example; however XYZ's filament costs about the same as most third-party materials.) Other 3D printers place no restrictions on the type or origin of the material.
It is now owned by 3D systems, one of the largest 3D printing manufacturers and 3D imaging specialists in the world. Makerbot and its CEO, Bre Pettis have reached mainstream attention when they were first featured in an original documentary film, Print the Legend. The movie can be viewed on Netflix.
You can expect prints good enough to generate income from this printer, far beyond that of hobby level printers. This is the reason why I’ve tried to keep my website simple and understandable for everyone. I have entered the jargon territory because at times it was unavoidable however, I’ve done my best to explain every “strange” term I’ve encountered during my research in simple terms.
Buying Guide
One of my 3D printing misconceptions was that choosing a 3D printer is like choosing a computer. You just have to look for the one which has the best specs. I failed to realize that 3D printer buyers were of different categories depending on their purposes. There are also several things you have to keep in mind like the printing speed, the printing methods and the materials that can be used, just to name a few. On this page. I attempted to cover as much ground as possible with that.
At this point, you might feel desperate thinking why I am not done yet. Don’t worry though, I won’t dwell too much on the matter and keep it short. While the informational pages are required for you not to beat your brains out, you also need to see practical and cool usages of 3D printing, right? I have two pages dedicated to them, one consisting of beautiful 3D print examples for home use (to be found here ), while the other list is far more advanced, since I wrote about 10 Amazing Examples of 3D Printing on a larger scale .
If you’re confused about where to find 3D models, take a look here. I found it really helpful when I was stuck for ideas (even though I tell all my friends I have a creative streak)!
Designing isn’t really my strength but as I discovered, this shouldn’t discourage anyone in my position from giving 3D printing a chance. On this page, I talk about various websites which have 3D models at our disposal, either for free or for a price.
If after searching this website thoroughly for information, you feel you found out everything you need to know, my mission has been accomplished. I’ve tried to make this website more than just a collection of reviews, deciding instead, to focus on the “before” and “after” the purchase of a 3D printer as well. In the end, I hope I’ve made life easier for you.

In the last few years, 3D printing has transformed from a niche market to a mainstream sensation, with over 150 models currently available. 3D printing is a manufacturing technique that allows you to create a physical object from a digital design by adding layer upon layer of material. It starts with a design document, and from there the printing process varies. Some desktop printers melt plastic onto a print platform, while larger industrial machines use lasers to melt metal precisely. Importantly, different 3D printers support different materials, from plastic to metals to sandstone – and the list of supported materials is growing every year.

Runner-Up, Best Budget: FlashForge Creator Pro
Acer’s Predator 17 G9-793-78CM is the best gaming laptop for most people. It has a great screen and powerful guts, it stays cool, and it can power a VR headset.
Results were mixed with the Printrbot Simple, which often failed dramatically.
While 3D printers have until recently been too expensive and complex for curious beginners, it’s possible to find a relatively inexpensive and approachable model to use at home. We spent 20 hours researching and testing three of the best beginner-focused 3D printers we could find and think the Tiertime Up Mini 2 is the best choice for most people just starting out with 3D printing. It has the best combination of reliability, features, and style. It was the easiest to set up and produced the highest number of great-quality prints of all the printers I tested.
The Mini 2 has the most features out of the group I tested, and some are rarely seen in this price range. It has a heated bed and enclosed printing space, which helps keep temperatures even while printing. The printer has a touchscreen and can print over Wi-Fi or USB; both of are almost unheard of in a printer under $600. Both the Simple and Maker Select v2 relied on the open source Cura software, a plus for users already familiar with the interface or who want finer control over the machines, but the Mini 2 came with proprietary software that is much simpler to use. The Printrbot Simple and Maker Select v2 required some fussing with their print settings in Cura, but the Mini 2’s software is already set up to work seamlessly with the printer, meaning the perfect print temperature, speed, and other settings are already loaded in. The Mini 2’s print bed also slid out of the machine for easy model removal.
The Tiertime Up Mini 2 was the clear pick due to its winning combination of reliability, features, and style. It was the easiest to set up and produced the highest number of great-quality prints of all the printers I tested.
XYZprinting’s line of Da Vinci printers is also a common poster child for the category. My past experiences with the machines left me believing that their low price tag is the sole reason for their popularity. When I reviewed the Da Vinci 1.0 for Gigaom. I had to have XYZprinting replace parts multiple times. I also found it to be poorly designed and was unable to coax it to print nice-looking models.
Here's how to support our writers and our work. For more on our ethics, ideas and how we work, read this. We obtain the products we review through a mixture of buying our own and working with companies to borrow review units. Our policy is to return or donate products after we’re finished working with them.
You should also be sure to follow the each software maker’s rules for heating up and cooling down the printers, which will help to prevent clogs.
For beginners, we passed up 3D printer kits. which are cheaper but require a great deal of assembly. The printers featured in this guide require 15 minutes or less to go from boxed to operational. We looked for an ability to reliably print good-looking parts straight out of the box with as little maintenance required as possible. I also disqualified brands with which I’ve had repeated bad experiences, which includes MakerBots and the temptingly cheap XYZprinting da Vinci line. The Flashforge Finder and New Matter MOD-t just barely missed being in the testing group due to their lack of a few key features.
The 5th-generation iPad is our new pick for most people, thanks to its compelling combination of performance, features, screen size, and price.
I also noted how many times I had to repair the printers, how often they needed their print beds leveled, and what it was like to remove completed models from the print bed. These are general upkeep issues that pop up at any level of 3D printer, but some printers are better than others at reducing the time you have to spend cleaning and repairing them.
What could be an issue for beginners is the Mini 2’s relatively enclosed design. Out of curiosity I opened its print head up once, and it was intimidating. A beginner would not feel comfortable making a quick repair. But the design also indicates Tiertime doesn’t expect many breakdowns. The warranty is good for 12 months.
For many, the Micro 3D is the face of inexpensive 3D printers after its gangbusters Kickstarter campaign. However, experts and reviewers alike have had mixed experiences with the printer.
The Maker Select v2 is by far the cheapest printer we tested. It’s not much to look at, but it put out consistently great prints on the largest print bed within our test group.
The printer worked right out of the box and consistently cranked out quality-looking prints. It’s also a stylishly modern addition to any desk.
The Maker Select v2 is based on one of the original 3D printer designs. It’s clunky and the most difficult of the group to assemble (it took me 15 minutes), but by not breaking the mold, it can rely on the years of thought that have gone into refining this style of printer. It failed zero times during my eight test prints–the best out of the group.
The New Matter MOD-t also narrowly missed being on the test list. It costs less than $400 and takes an innovative design approach that dramatically reduces the number of parts in the printer, which is supposed to limit breakdowns and user intimidation. The printer looks great and comes paired with a simple-to-use software program and model library. However, the printer is extremely new, and early reviews have been mixed.
The Best Sport Sunglasses
The Mini 2 is the most stylish-looking machine of the group, with an interior light and sleek black-and-white exterior. It looks modern enough to fit in next to a computer on a desk. The Mini 2 was, however, also the second largest printer of the group; at 20 pounds and with a footprint about the size of a laser printer, you likely won’t want to move it too often. However, it has a carrying handle built into its top.

There would be no way to write this guide without including the Zortrax M200. It is praised for its plug-n-play ease-of-use black jack canada and america, reliability (it boasts an extremely low fail rate), and ability to 3D print high-temperature materials with a high level of detail. Sold to hobbyists, educators, graduate students, engineers, prosumers and professional designers, the Zortrax M200 is an industry standby and priced just below $2,000, it’s still considered a very reasonable investment.
More “grab’n’go” than “plug’n’play,” the Bukito 3D printer offers two main selling points: professional-quality 3D prints and total portability in a ruggedly built, 6.2lb package. It can also achieve 3D print speeds of 200mm/s if you’re willing to forgo some of that resolution in favor of truly rapid prototypes.
For this reason, we’ve divided the list into a few broad categories, and included key technical specs. The list will also focus on 3D printers below $5,000. Below are some of the most important things to consider:
Rounding out the Ultimaker family of top-notch consumer 3D printers is the Ultimaker 2 Extended+ (build volume: 223 x 223 x 305mm, retailing at $3,030) and the Ultimaker Original+ (only $995), which is an excellent bargain option for users familiar with DIY 3D printer kits.
The Flashforge Creator Pro is a no-nonsense 3D printing workhorse: its sturdy, all-metal frame houses dual extruders and a heated, enclosed print bed that can handle PLA, ABS, and a range of specialty materials. Its structure has been compared to the popular MakerBot Replicator (we’ll get to that one later), yet Flashforge’s model is less than half the price. Though better for intermediate users, ambitious beginners can also benefit from Flashforge’s large and engaged support community.
Build Volume: Most desktop 3D printers are quite limited in their size, but for household projects, this usually isn’t a problem. Some models, such as the Rostock MAX, are prized for their larger build volume. Keep in mind, however, that it is also quite common to 3D print multiple small parts of a design and assemble or glue them together afterwards.
Read on to see some of the top 3D printer picks for 2016:
Within the category of SLA/DLP 3D printers, even the ‘budget’ options may seem like an investment. This is because the technology and materials for resin-based 3D printing are more advanced and more expensive overall—but for users who absolutely prize smooth, detailed, professional finishes, it could be worth taking the plunge.
Speed and Resolution: Consumer 3D printers are notorious for being slow. The majority range from around 50-100mm/s spin wheel for prizes, but as the technology advances, so too will the speed. At the same time, many 3D printers are capable of achieving quite high resolutions, from 200 down to as little as 20 (keep in mind that the lower the actual number, the higher and better the resolution will be). Some 3D printer models give users the option of increasing the speed by producing thicker layers, thereby reducing the resolution. The acceptable trade-off between speed and resolution will entirely depend on your needs as a maker, so keep that in mind when choosing your 3D printer.
The first 3D printer on our list is the M3D Micro, which also made it to our Cheapest 3D Printers of 2016 roundup for one obvious reason: excellent value for money. This Kickstarter success story offers a relatively small build volume, but good quality resolution for simple prints, making it ideal for beginners, educators, or anyone looking to get their first taste of desktop 3D printing. It has received some negative comments regarding its software and slow build-times, but overall, it’s a great entry-level choice.
With just a small learning curve, users can rely on the Lulzbot Mini to offer consistent 3D printed prototypes, educational models, tools, toys and trinkets. It may be considered a tad expensive for such a small machine, but depending on your needs slots games with free spins and bonus, that may not be a deal-breaker.
It’s not exactly a beginner kit, but for experienced 3D print enthusiasts it is a go-to. It also earned Make: Magazine’s ‘Best Value’ 2016 award.
Makergear’s M Series 3D printers were built on the philosophy that “better parts make better 3D printers.” Having experimented with a plywood frame on the M1, the developers switched to a black powder coated rigid steel frame for the M2, paired with CNC machined aluminum components and plastic parts that were 3D printed in-house on production M2 machines. The result? An extremely sturdy and precise machine that truly holds its own without constant tweaking and maintenance.
3D Printing Materials: FMD 3D printers most commonly use PLA or ABS filaments. PLA is biodegradable and generally quite affordable, but it can be brittle and break easily. On the flipside, ABS is more flexible, yet requires a heated bed to print. Other FDM-friendly materials include nylon, bronze and copper composites, wood-based filaments, and more, most of which are available in a wide variety of colors. Keep in mind that some 3D printer companies require users to buy their proprietary filaments, which can drive up costs.
Finally, although the 300mm/s build speed may already seem quite fast, WASP has also released the DeltaWASP 20 40 Turbo . which can reach the insane maximum speed of 600mm/s.
A step up in terms of both price and quality, the B9 Creator is a favorite in the 3D printing community. Rather than a UV laser, the B9 uses a digital light projector (DLP) to cure and harden the resin. Though an assembled version is available for $4,595, many users have commented that going for the DIY kit is worth it, since, although it does take time, it allows them to set it up to their exact specifications canadian online casinos 64157, therefore resulting in more tailored and high-quality 3D prints.
This plug’n’play 3D printer is widely available from commercial retailers, including Amazon, Lowe’s, and Home Depot, and is primarily targeted at educators, families, and beginners (Dremel has in fact been making a major push for 3D printing and STEM education via its Idea Builder series and Dremel Dreams classroom system).
For more advanced users, another relatively budget option is the recently-released $699 Prusa i3 MK2 . which boasts a 31% larger build volume of 250 x 210 x 200 mm, a new HeatBed MK42 print bed, 40% faster printing speeds, and other key improvements.
Perhaps one of its greatest advantages for entry-level users its is expanded build volume—at 254 x 228 x 203mm, it is the largest 3D printer on our entry-level list. Another key point for buyers? ROBO 3D sells through popular retailers, including Amazon, Best Buy . and Staples . making it accessible to a wide range of consumers.
Marketed as the #1 3D printer for homes and schools, the da Vinci Jr. 1.0w (the w stands for WiFi; a USB-only da Vinci Jr. is available for just $349) was built for ease-of-use, featuring auto-leveling and Z-offset calibration via touch-screen LCD. It also has a closed door for classroom safety, is lightweight and eco-friendly, and offers a 12-month warranty. Like the M3D, it doesn’t score very high for resolution, but if used for simple models that shouldn’t be a problem.
Italian innovator Massimo Moretti founded the World’s Advanced Saving Project, or WASP, with the vision of manufacturing reliable, high-quality 3D printers that encourage sustainable development. From the world’s largest Delta 3D printer, capable of building sustainable housing, to state-of-the-art ceramic 3D printing labs . WASP is at the forefront of truly useful 3D printing innovation.
As far as materials go, Formlabs does offer a library of its own proprietary resins, including Clear, Tough, White, Grey, Black, Flexible and Castable to cover most bases.
